YouthCARE is one of Western Australia's largest not-for-profit organisations. YouthCARE aims to create positive school communities, where students are empowered and encouraged to be the best they can be.  Each year YouthCARE Chaplains help thousands of students, staff and family members in Western Australian public-school communities by providing an essential social, emotional and mental health support service.

Reporting to the Head of Training, Innovation Programs and Partnerships (TIPP), the Pastoral Care Engagement Officer (PCEO) works in the Peel region to provide a sensitive Christian presence in educational communities and work collaboratively with their assigned schools to support and implement engagement strategies for students across a regional area. Schools across WA have recognised the need for assistance to engage and support the increasing number of students with attendance rates below 80%. Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide Pastoral Care, connection and support to students, parents and caregivers at assigned schools to:
    • Develop and outwork a school engagement strategy for students at risk of non-attendance.
    • Implement programs and services to assist student’s increase attendance at school.
    • Identifying and fostering connection with staff, teachers and the chaplain within the assigned school to assist the parent, caregiver and student.
    • Referring students, parents and caregivers to appropriate agencies and networks in the local community.
    • Develop and maintain a local resource brochure.
  • Adhere to all relevant WA and Australian legislation, including that concerning privacy, confidentiality, and child protection as well as all relevant DoE policies and procedures.

Essential:

  • Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Able to support the Christian Mission and Vision of YouthCARE.
  • Meets the following qualification requirements:
    • Certificate IV or above in Youth Work, Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care or Community Services, or a qualification listed in the Community Services Training Package OR an equal or higher qualification in a relevant field, OR
    • Equivalent or higher qualifications that are listed on the following professional bodies: Australian Psychology Board (APB), Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), Teachers Registration Board WA (TRBWA), Australian Counselling Association (ACA), NWBOA and Ministry and Theology qualifications that meet the Denominational Registration.
    • Also have the following Units of Competency: CHCCCS016 Respond to client needs & CHCMH001 Work with people with mental health issues (Please note: YouthCARE are able to provide these to you as a part of your Induction if you don’t have these Units).

Other Essential Criteria:

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver effective pastoral care, build meaningful relationships and engage in one-to-one pastoral conversations with children, young people, and adults.
  • Demonstrated active engagement in the life of a Christian Church and is a member or associate Church of YouthCARE.
  • Demonstrated ability to network with local organisations.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work within an educational environment, in particular an understanding of primary schools and experience working with students, parents, teachers and other staff.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated capacity to use the Microsoft Office® suite.
  • Be able to obtain through the Department of Education, a Working with Children Check (WWCC) and National Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) to work within the school environment – this is NOT a National Police Clearance.
